Join us at The Gwen for a Luxury Collection Thanksgiving along Chicago’s Miracle Mile, and meanwhile enjoy one of the nation’s greatest holiday celebrations: Uncle Dan’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, aka “Chicago’s Grand Holiday Tradition.”
Marking its 85th annual edition, this spectacular parade—a worthy counterpart of the world-famous Macy’s procession in New York City—marches down State Street between Congress and Randolph on the morning of Thursday, November 22nd. Reserve your guest room or suite here at The Gwen and enjoy close proximity to the supersized spectacle!
The 2018 Uncle Dan’s Thanksgiving Day Parade
Chicago’s own Thanksgiving Day parade launched as the Christmas Caravan during the Great Depression and has since grown spectacularly to become one of the country’s biggest and best-known parades.
Stepping off at 8 AM and broadcast live on nationwide TV, Uncle Dan’s Thanksgiving Day Parade wows hundreds of thousands of cheering spectators with giant balloons (from the mascot Teddy Turkey to Garfield the cat), fine-tuned marching bands and dance troupes, Broadway acts, equestrian units, impressive floats, and various special guests.
This year’s parade includes participants such as the Harlem Globetrotters, Bertrand’s Miniature Horses, the Chicago Blackhawks, the Royal Bahamas Police Force Marching Band, Mandala South Asian Performing Arts, Medieval Times Dinner & tournament, Ballet Folklorico Sones Mexicanos, the Miss Saigon cast, and the Illinois-based Midwest Garrison of the 501st Legion, a worldwide group that dresses up in costumes of Star Wars villains. Oh, and naturally Santa Claus is taking time out of a pretty busy time of year up at the North Pole for the occasion. Can you say variety?
Uncle Dan’s Thanksgiving Day Parade Grand Marshals
We don’t yet know the 2018 Grand Marshal for Uncle Dan’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, but past figures holding that esteemed role have included Ronald McDonald in 2017, comedian and actor Matt Walsh in 2016, and actor, director, and onetime professional wrestler David Arquette in 2015.
